Sunday Brunch in New York City
Food plays such a strong role in society. Food brings people and cultures together. Every holiday, every celebration includes food. We anticipate food, we savor food and food brings us joy. What would summer Sundays be without burgers on the grill or Super Bowl Sunday be without a giant bag of chips and massive side of guacamole? And what would Sundays in New York be like without brunch? While Sunday brunch is not unique to New York, in no city, is Sunday brunch quite as integral to the culture as it is in New York. Sunday brunch is a tradition that has been honed and perfected. New Yorkers are completely devoted to it.
It is a ritual during which we can unwind and catch up with our family and friends after a long week. And, we can enjoy some amazing food. Some of my favorite brunch cafés are in Soho, such as Jack’s Wife Freda where you can order rosewater waffles that make your mouth water just looking at them. Another go to is Epistrophy where you can listen to live jazz while delighting in lemon whipped ricotta pancakes with maple syrup.
Last but not least is Maman which has a croque ‘maman’ with Parisian ham and homemade béchamel. This delicious sandwich should be topped off with a homemade oreo or white chocolate pretzel cookie. Sometimes, I brunch in sweats and a t-shirt. Other days, I slip into a beautiful golden jacket which somehow makes the food taste even better.
